Biyografi

Reha Metin ALKAN is a Professor in Geomatics Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in Istanbul. He holds MSc and PhD degrees in Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering Department from ITU. Prof.Dr. Alkan continued his academic career at Ryerson University as a visiting associate professor in 2006. His research area mainly covers satellite positioning and navigation, hydrographic surveying, geodesy and surveying, operational research, and land management.

Professor Alkan has conducted several research studies at the national and international levels resulting in several publications (about 300) in prestigious journals and conferences on mainly satellite positioning, surveying, geodesy, internationalization of higher education and others. Dr. Alkan also contributes to 13 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with his academic activities (3-Good Health and Well-being, 4-Quality Education, 6-Clean Water and Sanitation, 8-Decent Work and Economic Growth, 9-Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 10-Reduced Inequality, 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12-Responsible Consumption and Production, 13-Climate Action, 14-Life Below Water, 15-Life On Land, 16-Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, 17-Partnerships for the Goals).

Prof.Dr. Reha Metin ALKAN supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate thesis including Master of Science and Doctorates. He has also contributed to education in ITU by giving many courses. In addition, he took part in the evaluation of many projects. He is on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals in the fields of geomatics. Dr. Alkan has undertaken the duty of refereeing in prestigious international journals (indexed by Science Citation Index, Science Citation Index-Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index). He took part in the Honorary Committee, Scientific Committee, Organizing and Executive Committee and Advisory Committee of many national and international scientific and social meetings. Dr. Alkan has given seminars to a wide and diverse audience and has been a speaker on various panels.

Having memberships of commissions and boards in many professional and social institutions and organizations as an advisory board and scientific program committee member, delegate of chamber, Graduate Student Admission Commission, Scientific Meetings Support Commission, Education Development Commission, Effective Education Techniques Commission, Department Performance Commission, Professional Group Publication Committee, Dr. Alkan also is a member of Canadian Hydrographic Association, European Geosciences Union (EGU), Canadian Hydrographic Association, Land Management Platform, Piri Reis Mapping-Real Estate and Geographical Information Systems Association, Turkish National Geodesy Commission, Chamber of Survey and Cadastre Engineers of Türkiye and other various professional and social committees.

According to the metrics based on Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, h-indexes are 11, 11, and 19 (having 1481 citations), respectively. His Research Interest Score in Research Gate is 1335 with 16 h-index (with about 98,000 reads and 1000 citations). He has been awarded the Elsevier Certificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing Award, Elsevier Certificate of Reviewing Award, Best Paper Award, Best Poster Award, Man of the Year Award, and Best Research Assistant in Department.

He has managed to continue his professional career in the administrative field with the Head of Evaluation Team for The Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK); City Exam Coordinator of The Centre for Assessment, Selection and Placement (OSYM); İstanbul University Open and Distance Education Faculty (AUZEF); Atatürk University Open Education Faculty; Anadolu University Open Education Faculty (AOF); Vice Head of Geomatics Department; Acting Dean; Board Faculty Member (Professor Representative); President and Member of Foundations; Member of Turkish Inter-university Board (ÜAK); Chairman of the Board and Board Member of Çorum Technopark; Head of Development Board of Central Black Sea Development Agency (OKA); Chairman of the Board for Hitit University Scientific and Technical Application and Research Centre; Member of R&D; Innovation and Industrial Application Support Programme Evaluation Board of KOSGEB Directorate of Çorum; Advisor to Rector (ITU); Department Laboratory Responsible (ITU); Research Assistant Representative of ITU Department of Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering, and Founder of Turkish Green Crescent Çorum Branch.

He has been the President of Hitit University in Çorum, Türkiye, between 2011-2018. As President of Hitit University, Professor Alkan has mainly focused on quality management, accreditation, and international academic collaborations while achieving a successful work on transferring information which was produced under 3rd generation university concept for human benefit and production purposes via promoting university-industry-public collaborations. As a result of the importance given to the scientific infrastructure, Professor Alkan has founded Hitit University Scientific-Technical Application and Research Centre and Technopark resulting in a significant expansion of the research funds given for scientific projects.

According to the AD Scientific Index-2023 "Turkey Top 10,000 Scientists" list, which is in the list of 1,082,000 academics from 216 countries and 19,500 Universities and Institutions, the list shows the first 10,000 academics with the highest h-index and the most cited Universities and institutions from Türkiye, Prof. Dr. Alkan was ranked among the 10,000 Scientists listed from Türkiye.

Professor Alkan is married and has one daughter.
