Proje Özeti

On February 6, 2023, a Mw 7.8 earthquake occurred in Kahramanmaraş province, southeastern Turkey, and the northern border of Syria. It broke along 100 km of a fault line. This event was followed some nine hours later by a Mw 7.5 aftershock located around 59 km to the southwest. Tremors were felt as far away as Israel or Lebanon. One week later, the death toll squared to 50,000 causalities. The main objective of this project is to gain insight into the causes and consequences of these earthquakes to be learned and taught in our universities. The strategy involves applying both an interdisciplinary approach and Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. The project is co-headed by ITU and UPM teams.

The scope of this challenge encompasses: (1) collecting relevant data and information; (2) improving knowledge about its effects and damages on buildings and infrastructure; and (3) analyzing the technical, societal and economic features derived from the said earthquake, with the aim of elaborating a set of seismic retrofit measures and recommendations for the future supported by AI tools.
