Development of an Electrical Generation, Control, Distribution, and Management System for Use in Education and Training of Marine Engineers

Use of simulators are of great advantage for training marine engineers working onboard ships. Marine engineering university level curricula is an interdisciplinary engineering concept with more focus in engines, boilers, compressors, piping systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and their maintenance. Although university level marine engineering education curricula covers subjects in electrical engineering discipline, they are usually few and therefore marine engineers depend on an electrical technician in onboard work operations. Understanding the electrical generation, distribution, control systems, and remote monitoring systems are gaining more importance every year. Probably for that reason, during a workshop held by Marine Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University Maritime Faculty, the marine engineers in field asked for giving electrical and control systems more importance in undergraduate education.

In this study, use of simulators in education training of marine engineering cadets are investigated. Training of electrical subjects in ship applications are focused. A simulator application is developed for use in electrical courses and trainings in marine engineering undergraduate programs. The software, developed using National Instruments LabVIEW, demonstrates the electrical generation with diesel engines and a shaft generator, ship’s electrical network system, power distribution and operations related with power consumers in a typical cargo ship. Software development methodology and use of the simulators in such trainings are presented. Demonstrated program can also be viewed as an example training tool for training of field operators working in other challenging environments where electrical generation and management is of high importance.
