An Evaluation of Thermal Performance of Insulation Materials Commonly Used and Produced with Waste on the Exterior Wall Sections

Recycling of waste has become important nowadays because of the fact that non-renewable resources are

consumed quickly. In this respect, the governments try to raise awareness of waste-free production and recycling

with various regulations. As an alternative recycling method, this paper suggests that various waste can also be

used in the production of alternative thermal insulation materials in the field of building material production,

where resource consumption is high. Thermal insulation materials are important because they provide a

comfortable living space for human health and reduce energy consumption due to fossil fuels. Excessive energy

consumption and the surge in the price of fossil fuels that came with the industrial revolution in the late 19th

century caused a worldwide energy crisis. In this period, heat losses started to be calculated along with energy

saving consciousness, which paved the way for the industrial production of thermal insulation materials. In

literature, it can be seen that a wide variety of inorganic and organic waste can be used in the production of

thermal insulation materials. In this study, commonly used thermal insulation and thermal insulation produced

with waste materials are investigated, and their properties are presented and evaluated with Arıoğlu Method on

the exterior wall sections. The evaluation method is devised as respectively determining the level of system

resolution, functional requirements, characteristics expected in the material, purpose and necessities, criteria,

important weights, benefit values, usage and variation values and evaluation of alternatives. As a result, the

present thermal insulation materials meet almost all requirements in many different areas, but there is no thermal

insulation material that perfectly meets all requirements. It is thought that this study will be useful in choosing
