Özet

Engine Room Simulator of Istanbul Technical University, Maritime Faculty (ITUMF) is installed during June 2001 and the simulator training and education of marine engineering students of ITUMF has started as a continuing effort.

The curricula design of engine room simulators are initially established as a parallel to the updated version of IMO Model Course 2.07. However, IMO Model Course is so general and needs to be modified for different simulator models with available functions and systems as well as according to the purpose and use of the ERS. For example, Model Course 2.07 subjects are not clearly defined for management level of training.

Current ITUMF ERS courses aim to develop knowledge and skills of senior level ITUMF students on the regular operation, watchkeeping, and malfunction detection of engine room machinery and systems. In order to achieve a good program; classroom briefings, workstation guided exercises with checklist concept, and full-mission training are utilized.

This paper outlines the specifications of ITUMF simulator and then describes the current simulator curricula design with the improvements on the training and education of marine engineering students. Also, the authors discuss the feasibility of the use of the ERS to establish higher level skills of students, such as risk management, teamworking, and “internal” and “external” communication including the standardization of Maritime English with checklist concept using the ERS.
