Özet

This paper presents the results from experimental study on the actual behavior of header end-plate connections. To better understand the hysteretic behavior of these connections in terms of the stiffness and the strength, three specimens with different end plate thicknesses were considered and subjected to cyclic loads. Measurements were made to obtain the moment-rotation relations of the connections governed by three parameters such as, initial stiffness, moment capacity and rotation capacity. Details of the specimens and the experimental procedure are described in the paper. Results revealed that the moment capacity increases with the increase in end-plate thickness. For the thinner end-plates, the flexural behavior of the end-plate is the governing parameter in obtaining the moment capacity. As the end-plates become thicker, no significant change was realized in the initial stiffness of the connection and failure occurs by fracture of beam web adjacent to the weld. Although moment capacity of the connections with thicker end-plates are greater than those with thinner ones, they seem not to be feasible for use together with special moment frames because this requires that the rotation capacity of the connection be at least 0.04 rad. Experimental results have also shown that header end-plate connections have limited stiffness and flexural strength. However, they seem to be promising to provide the structural systems with additional stiffness, ductility and strength.
