Biography
Mehmet Emin Salgamcioglu is born in November 11, 1980, Istanbul, Turkey. Mehmet (BSc. MSc. PhD., ITU) is an Architect and Associate Professor in Istanbul Technical University. He was a visiting scholar in University of Michigan in 2010 and worked on several professional design projects previously. His current research areas are Architectural Design and Morphology, Space Syntax, Gentrification, Housing, and Domestic Space Organisation. He also has international and national architectural design competition awards as well as published design critics, book chapters, conference papers, and journal articles.
He is an academician in the architectural design field and also has design experience over 10 years in architectural design field. After he got his BSc. Degree in 2003, he has contributed to several national and international architectural design competitions and urban planning projects. His Architectural and Urban Design experience includes various key projects such as 2015 Administration Building of Great City Municipality of Tekirdag, National Competition as a consultant; 2014 Düzce University Campus Urban Design National Competition; 2011 Museum Design Competition Project for Troy – Canakkale; 2011 Design Competition for Governmental Management Buildings – Hatay, Turkey; 2008 Çengelkoy Urban Planning Project - Uskudar, Istanbul, Turkey - Employer: Uskudar Municipality of Istanbul (will be constructed); 2007 ITU K0 Gate - Ayazaga, Istanbul; 2007 Kuzguncuk Urban Planning Project - Uskudar, Istanbul, Turkey - Employer: Uskudar Municipality of Istanbul (will be constructed); 2005 National Architectural Design Competition of Maritime Museum - Besiktas, Istanbul.
His recent awards in architectural design competitions include: Honorable mention award, Gökçeada (Imbros Island) High School Campus National Architectural Competition, 2014; Awarded 1st honorable mention in National Architectural Competition, New Bridge of Avanos and Its Environment, 2013; Equally Awarded in International Architecture Competition for the headquarters of “Organization of Islamic Conference”, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 2006. He also has an award on Publication Category of First National Architectural Critics Competition (Chamber of Architects, Turkey) with the article: “Housing in natural environment, Heidegger’s point of view and examining the relations with belongingness”; in 2003, graduated from Bachelor of Architecture with the Award of Success (for the best GPA in architecture department - 1st in ranking) Istanbul Technical University / Faculty of Architecture / Istanbul, Turkey; in 2002 Invited to Berlin “TU–Campus 2030” summer school by TU Berlin (Berlin Technical University), Germany.
He’s recently researching in several projects on built environment in relation to environment-behavior theories, and space syntax studies. He’s teaching in undergraduate and graduate level courses; also his recent administrational positions and works in ITU are Vice Chair, Department of Architecture (2018-2021); Architectural Design Studios’ Coordination Board Member (2012-2014); Architectural Design MSc & PhD Programmes Board Membership (2018-2020); Education & Fellowship Commissions Membership (2014-2018); Architectural Design and Morphology Research Group, Vice Chair (2014-2016); and NAAB Accreditation Commission Membership (2014-2021). He is one of the founding members of “National Architecture Accreditation Association” (former Architecture Accreditation Board - MİAK), in 2019. He is currently a proud member of International Association for People-Environment Studies, IAPS Network, and “Union of International Architects, Chamber of Turkey”.
