Biography

Dr. Konstantinos Vasilakos (https://konvas.netlify.app) born in Athens, Greece, is a lecturer and interdisciplinary artist working in the milieu of Sonic Arts. He is based in Istanbul where he leads the Sonic Arts postgraduate studies path at the Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) at Istanbul Technical University. He has contributed to the expansion of the curriculum of the program introducing courses that elaborate on Interactive sound and non-linear composition.

He is the founder of the Istanbul Coding Ensemble, a research group with postgraduate students focussing on collective improvisation using networked music systems and live coding. His performances span across various music paradigms from Algorave to Computer, and Electroacoustic music genres. His courses focus on the creation of interactive media for algorithmic composition and sound art and multimedia design for interactive sound installations. His research interests include sonification, new instruments for musical expression, and live coding.

He is the author of numerous publications that focus on state-of-the-art practices in the field of Sonic and Sound Art. He has developed projects that entail multidisciplinary work involving real-time sound design such as IPSOS and Lick the Toad, the former used as an educational outreach platform, which was commissioned by art@CMS, at CERN for training teachers/educators in experimental particle physics through sound, and the latter using machine learning deployed to investigate in technology-mediated audience participation of musical performance. Therefore, his collaborations span across projects that stem from the ongoing dialogue between art and science, and as such, he has participated in various interdisciplinary projects such as ACROE-ICA, at Grenoble University, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research, at CERN, in Switzerland.

Finally, he is a member of the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association, and a member of the Birmingham Ensemble for Electroacoustic Research, in the UK. He has a Ph.D. in Music from Keele University, UK, and a Masters in Music from Utrecht School of Arts, in The Netherlands. His works are presented in various academic and non-academic settings internationally such as France, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Greece, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and South America (Chile and Brazil).
