She was born in Bilecik/TURKEY in 1973. She had her B.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering (1995) at Istanbul Technical University and M.Sc. degree (1998) in Environmental Engineering at Bogazici University, Istanbul. She completed her Ph.D degree between years 1999-2005 in Environmental Engineering (1995) at Istanbul Technical University. During her Ph.D, she worked at Vanderbilt University with Prof. R. E. Speece on anaerobic treatment of municipal sludges. She also worked with Prof. P. A. Wilderer at the Institute of Water Quality Control and Waste Management in Munich Technical University (TUM)/Germany and she studied on identification of anaerobic communities by FISH technique. She worked as a research assistant in Bogazici University at the Institute of Environmental Sciences between years 1996-1999. She is currently a Professor in ITU Environmental Engineering Department since 2020. She is married and has two kids.
