Abstract

Quaternization of poly(4-vinyl pyridine), (P4-VP) by common alkyl halides can be per-formed with relatively low (up to 65-70%) conversion yields. Here we describe fully quaternization of P(4-VP) with activated halides such as chloro 2-propanone and 2-chloroacetamide in dimethylformamide (DMF) at room temperature.
