Abstract

This paper studies the equations of rack cutters for generating involute gears with asymmetric teeth. The asymmetry means that different pressure angles are applied for driving and coast sides, respectively. By applying the equations of designed profile of rack cutter, the principle of coordinate transformation, the theory of differential geometry, and the theory of gearing, the mathematical model of involute spur gear with asymmetric teeth is given. Trochoidal envelope traced by cutter is also investigated. Computer graphs of asymmetric involute spur gears are presented based on the given model, and also generation simulation is illustrated.
