Abstract

A vortex theory with a Skyrme-like quartic interaction is augmented by the addition of a further complex scalar field sigma and an abelian gauge field A(mu) to a model with a superconducting string. In particular it is shown that the energetics allows a sigma-condensate in the string which breaks the abelian gauge symmetry and permits Goldstone bosons to transport a persistent current along the string.
