Abstract

Istanbul recreates itself constantly. A continually evolving city, it can be likened to a living organism. As Hulya Ertas explains it owes much of its vibrancy and heterogeneity to its unprogrammed spaces. These create a blank canvas for the metropolis' citizens and their activities. They are also at the essence of the city's enviable diversity, as they provide important meeting places for a rich mix of social and ethnic groups.
