Abstract

17(th) of August 1999-Izmit (Kocaeli) Earthquake was one of the most demolishing earthquake affecting Turkey. This paper deals with the recent seismic activity of the North Anatolian Fault, the characteristics of the Izmit Earthquake and its effects on buildings in the main damaged areas. Finally, causes of the great damages are discussed and some solutions are proposed.
