Abstract

Hydrated zinc borates have found commercial application as fire-retardants and smoke suppressants for various polymeric materials. Because of their anti-bacterial and anti-corrosive properties, they are also used in many other applications. Due to its relatively high dehydration temperature (about 290 degrees C), 2ZnO.3B(2)O(3)3.5H(2)O offers a significant advantage over other hydrated zinc borates and its worldwide annual production exceeds 10.000 metric tolls.
