Abstract

Chemical analysis of industrial waste waters from two textile and seven metal plants in the organized industrial region of Kayseri has been performed. Mean concentrations of the investigated parameters in mg/l for nine stations ranged: total dissolved solids (TDS): 50-381, chemical oxygen demand (COD): 53-684, ammonia nitrogen: 0.4-13.1, nitrite nitrogen: 0.1-1.0, fluoride: 0.4-2.1, oil-grease: 15-262, total chromium: 0.15-0.23, chromium (V1): 0.06-0.18, lead: 0.05-0.94, iron: 1.2-15.3, copper: 0.43-1.92, zinc: 0.46-5.32, nickel: 0.1-1.11 and aluminum: 0.06-4.92. The concentrations of cadmium and cyanide were found to be below detection limits in all the waste water samples. The level of some of the investigated parameters (especially concentrations of metal ions) of the waste water samples were above the values for the industrial waste water samples given in the Water Pollution Control Regulation of Turkish Authorities. Significant correlations were found between the concentrations of lead-copper, lead-zinc, lead-nickel, lead-aluminum, copper-nickel, zinc-nickel, zinc-aluminum and nickel-aluminum.
