The temperature distributions in the refractory sidewalls of a glass melting furnace are important in predicting the life-time of a glass tank. In this paper a finite difference numerical model of the heat transfer through the sidewall of a glass furnace is outlined. An iterative algorithm is applied due to the nonlinear boundary conditions. Experimental measurements of the temperature distribution on the exterior wall of a real furnace, obtained using a laser thermometer are compared with the results of the numerical calculations.
