Hydrology, a basic and applied science, is now also considered a social science. Hydrology is under change, which challenged the science of hydrology to change into a social science. The change comes from not only natural reasons but also from anthropogenic factors. Higher number of population and modern lifestyle make it difficult to supply increasing water demand from the existing water resources. In order to develop hydrology as a social science, river basins should be taken as systems accepting inputs with social components and producing outputs with social components.
Temel ve uygulamalı bir bilim olan Hidroloji artık aynı zamanda bir toplumsal bilimdir. Hidroloji değişim yaşamaktadır. Bu değişim Hidroloji bilimini toplumsal bilim olmaya zorlamıştır. Değişim doğal nedenlerin yanında özellikle nüfus ve modern yaşam standartları ile artan su talebinin miktarı belli olan su kaynaklarından karşılanması zorunluluğundan kaynaklanan insani nedenlere bağlanmaktadır. Akarsu havzalarına artık toplumsal bileşenler de içeren girdileri yine toplumsal bileşenleri olan çıktılara dönüştüren sistemler gözü ile bakılması ve toplumsal değişkenleri içeren modellerle temsil edilmesi gereklidir.
