Substrate inhibition phenomenon has been frequently faced as a problem in treating industrial wastewaters using activated sludge process. Although there have been models proposed to express substrate or product inhibition in the literature, there is not a well defined and tested model which is applicable to all cases. Therefore, different approaches have been adopted to express the kinetics of inhibition. In this paper substrate inhibition models in the literature have been compiled, classified and discussed to provide a systematic approach for selecting and applying the models.
