Polymers with labile azo groups in the main chain were prepared by free radical polymerization initiated by photodecomposition of 4,4'-azo-bis(4-cyanopentanoyl)-bis benzoin (ACPB) in methylene chloride solution at lambda=350 nm. These polymers were used as initiator for free radical polymerization of a second monomer to yield block copolymers. Free radical sites located at the chain ends were generated by the thermolysis of the azo groups present in the polymer.
