Abstract

The dependence of the cyclic stress - strain behaviour of the precipitation strengthened 2024 aluminum alloy on the cycling parameters is investigated. The 2024 alloy was aged at two conditions, under which concave parts in the hysteresis loops were observed: at 463 K for 17 h and at 478 K for 7 h. A new Baushinger Concavity Parameters is defined. The mechanisms responsible for this concavity and its dependence on the microstructure and straining conditions are discussed. The disappearance of the concavity during cyclic deformation was also investigated.
