Özet

In recent years, most flotation studies have been devoted to investigate the effects of particle morphology in terms of shape and roughness of surfaces with the aim of developing better conditions for flotation and other particle related processes like coagulation. Thus, results of these studies clearly showed that flotation recoveries in particular increased in line with decreasing the roundness of particles and increasing roughness. In this context, the production method of materials provides an important parameter in modifying particle size and its morphology.

In this study, changes in surface morphology of barite and colemanite minerals with the same production method were investigated. For this purpose, coarse sized minerals were respectively through jaw, cone and roller crusher followed by grinding the size group of -2 +1 mm as a function of grinding time in a ceramic ball mill. The material of each period was sieved to obtain -0.074 +0.038 mm group upon which roughened with silicon carbide; their roughness degree was then measured by a profilometer device. In conclusion, it was found that while the shape characteristics of particles were almost the same for both minerals, the roughness value was varied. In addition, while the lowest roundness values were obtained for colemanite and barite in the case of 240 seconds grinding, the highest roughness degree was obtained after 60 minutes mixing with SiC. Hence, the flotation recoveries of these minerals were found to increase up to twofold the mechanism of which will be discussed in this paper.
