Abstract

This paper is aimed at determining the relationship between steering vibration, pneumatic tires and axle kinematics. The mechanical model, which consists of the steering system, the suspension and vehicle system, has in total 12 degrees of freedom. Parameters with higher influence on shimmy are: king pin offset, longitudinal stiffness of suspension, class of the way, and speed of the car. Parameters without influence are wheel load and camber. The practical possibilities of reducing steering vibration are discussed. It is found that an optimum fixing of the axle parameters as regards steering vibration is not always realizable in practice and a compromise must be sought in the design.
