In power systems, thermal power plants are also used as production units, but thermal power plants
produce energy as output, while fuel consumption is an input. The economic operation of power
systems is very important in terms of reducing the fuel costs of thermal power plants. The distribution
of the power demanded by the load bars in the system by considering the fuel costs of the thermal
production units in the system is the subject of the economic dispatch problem. In the production of
electrical energy, the power plants are defined with active power (MW), demand power is given in
terms of active power (MW) etc. because of the definition of active power, economic values of active
power have been calculated. However, since reactive power is drawn from load buses in an energy
system, reactive powers must also be considered. In this case, when performing economic operation
analysis of a power system, the optimum power flow should be made by evaluating the active and
reactive power values together. In this study, economic operation analysis was made by considering
reactive powers in different power systems. When the results of the analysis are analyzed, it is seen
that energy production cost values ($ / h) decrease when optimum power flow is performed instead of
traditional power flow.
