Abstract

This study involves the boriding of low carbon steel via novel integrated pulse current application in CRTD-Bor-molten salt electrolysis. The effects of process temperatures (950, 1000, and 1050 degrees C) and times (5, 10 and 30 min) were investigated at the constant current density of 200 mA/cm(2) and the duty cycle of 1/4 (t(on) = 1 sec, t(off) = 3 sec). The pulsed-borided specimens produced at the optimized parameters (i.e. 1000 degrees C and 30 min) had the surface hardness of 1800 +/- 100 HV with the perfect adhesion to the substrate (HF1). Besides, the activation energy of this combined process was calculated as 38.8 kJ/mol which is nearly 36.7 % lower than the reported values in literature.
