Abstract

This paper details the design and optimization of a brushless wound rotor synchronous motor (BL-WRSM) for a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). A cost-effective motor design that minimizes reliance on rare-earth materials is proposed. The project encompasses two stages of optimization: initially, an iterative method is employed to determine the geometric design of the stator and rotor. This design is refined for full-load conditions using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The main focus is to optimize total harmonic distortion (THD) and magnetic flux density distribution through pole shape modification. The paper provides an overview of the design methodology, initial and final motor design, the optimization strategies employed, and the resultant performance enhancements.
