High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) applications have been increasing in parallel with the development of semiconductor technology. Their corona performance is generally better than that of the traditional AC transmission. Corona cages and scaled transmission system models are preferred to determine the corona characteristics and the corona performance of the prospective alternative designs. On the other hand, cage dimension and conductor scaling should be optimized to simulate the real operational conditions. This paper presents the studies performed for corona cage design to identify the corona characteristics of a prospective 500-600 kV HVDC line in Turkey. Cage dimensions are determined using the simulation results for the real system at rated operating voltages and the scaled conductors mounted in a cage at reasonable voltage levels. Finally, corona inception voltages and corresponding maximum field strengths were determined by experiments and compared with the simulation results.
