Abstract

This paper presents results on compaction of amorphous TiAl-type powders by both conventional hot isostatic pressing (HIP'ing) and extremely high strain rate explosive compaction (EC). 100% density and a grain size of 40 nm were achieved after HIP'ing at 725 degreesC, whereas smaller grain size or even an amorphous state was obtained after EC. However, in the latter case the microstructure was non-homogenous, exhibiting some porosity, internal cracks and a high level of oxygen.
