Abstract

Roadheaders are mobile and flexible partial-face machines, with selective mining ability, used for excavation of soft to medium strength rock formations. These features make them very attractive for application in underground mining and tunneling operations. The selection of these machines and prediction of their performances are very important issues for scheduling and costing. Importance, advantages and disadvantages, application/utilization areas, production rates and limitations of roadheaders, developments in roadheader technology and machine characteristics will be firstly reviewed in this paper. Then, some roadheader applications in Turkish mining and civil construction industries will be reviewed and the production rates, machine utilization rates and problems encountered will be summarized.
