In the maritime industry, personnel selection has an important role in the safe and efficient operation of the
vessels. The selection of personnel who are not suitable to work on the ship could cause conflicts between
personnel on board and jeopardize the safety of vessel operations. The cause of many operational or navigational
troubles and accidents is mostly human error. Qualified seafarers should be employed on board to avoid these
situations that pose a major threat to life, property and environmental safety. At this stage, it could be a difficult
decision-making process for companies to select personnel effectively.
In this study, the selection problem of seafarers to work on tanker ships in an anonymous company is addressed
as a case study. It was applied Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method which is used in multi-criteria
decision-making problems with the aim of eliminating uncertainty. Criteria were determined for each of the
vacant master, chief officer, junior officer and deck cadet positions, compared and weighted separately. As a
result of the calculations, the most suitable candidates to work on tanker ships were selected. It is observed in
this study that the FAHP method is functional in dealing with seafarer selection problems in the maritime field.
