Özet

Nuclear energy has been considered as a viable and sustainable energy production option for the world. The commercial use of nuclear energy was introduced in the late 50’s. A tremendous growth was observed in the early 70’s. The expected expansion at that time was enormous. Unfortunately, three terrible accidents, Three Miles Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima, have influenced the global expansion of nuclear energy. Recently, global warming and climate change have been considered as an important threat for the future of mankind. As a result of this, the expansion of renewable energy and shrinkage of fossil fuel based systems are the elements of main scenario for the future. How about nuclear energy? Risks and opportunities associated with nuclear are discussed with an independent point of view. Furthermore, the roles of countries and big vendor companies have been changing in the global nuclear industry. Emerging countries and new role players have been appearing in the market. A possible growth scenario for nuclear together with new prospective technologies and new role players will be discussed to create a perspective for the future of nuclear energy. The status and perspective for the role of nuclear in the future energy mix of Turkey are also discussed with different scenarios.
