In this study, the effect of adding lime to a high-sulphur lignitic coal on the SO2 reduction has been investigated with the aim of forming CaSO4 in the ash product. Tuncbilek lignite containing 2.6 %S has been used in the experimental work. The method of adding lime, the effect of coal size, the contact time between lime and coal have been investigated. The results show that when lime suspension is sprayed onto the coal, the sulphur capture ratio increases with decreasing particle size. Upon combustion of lime coated coal, 32% combustible sulphur was found to remain in the ash.
