In this paper, using a rigorous quasi 3-D electro-opto-thermal numerical model, we simulate the effect of gain-cavity offset on different performance characteristics of a gain-guided vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). For the first time, we introduce a microscopic model for gain-cavity detuning phenomenon and present a quasi 3D thermal analysis. Using the model, the effect of offset on threshold current, mode competition, and high-temperature performance of VCSEL are analyzed. We determine the circumstances which result in minimum threshold current, better transverse mode competition and thermal stability.
