In this study, a method on scoring of cylindrical spur and helical gear mechanisms, based on the mean tooth profile heat, is introduced. In essence the method consists of a comparison of mean tooth profile heat during meshing with the critical mean tooth profile heat. To check the method, experiments were carried out. Using the data of these experiments a correction factor (safety factor) for the method is determined. The results of the experiments are given, and the results and the method are quantitatively analyzed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
