Coal is the prime fossil fuel in Turkey and
its huge reserves (15 billion tones) and distribution in different regions
around Turkey make it the most reliable source of energy. However Turkish coals need to be washed
from technological, economic and environmental point of view because of having
low calorific value and containing high ash and sulfur contents. Therefore, it
is very important to reveal the washing ability of Turkish lignite placed in
different regions. For this purpose
investigation of washability of lignite which has 30% ash content and 4500
upper calorific value from Bursa-Keles region was carried out at the present
study. To determine the wash ability characteristics of coal, float and sink
tests was applied on the coal prepared in close size fractions (-100+50 mm ;
-50+25 mm ; -25+6 mm ; -6+0,5 mm) and then - 0,5 mm size fraction was evaluated
to obtain clean coal using the Riechert Spiral.
As a result of these experiments, coal washing process flowsheet for this particular
coal has been created and proposed and the simulation and modelling studies of
this process were done using MS-Excel program based on the washability data.
